Russia Approves New GOST Standard for Food Additive E202 (Potassium Sorbate)

27 August 2026

A new state standard (GOST) for the food additive E202, used as a preservative to extend the shelf life of food products, has been adopted in Russia. The regulation will come into effect on January 1, 2027.

Potassium sorbate, also known as E202, must be produced in the form of crystals, crystalline powder, or granules. When heated for 90 minutes at a temperature of 105°C, the substance must retain its white color. A solution containing E202 must be colorless and tasteless.

In terms of its effect on the human body, potassium sorbate is classified as a low-hazard substance.

The food additive E202 is used in dairy products, including cheeses and yogurts, to prevent mold growth and preserve flavor. In meat and fish products, potassium sorbate is used to extend shelf life. In addition, the additive can be found in sauces, marinades, baked goods, and various beverages.
